How Much Do Radio DJs Get Paid?

Radio DJRadio DJ

When people ask, how much do radio djs get paid, it is not a straight forward answer. There are several different factors that can affect the salary of a radio or party dj. The first and perhaps most important is the location of the radio station or party that is being hosted. If for instance you work in a city where there are dozens of radio stations that are all competing for listeners then your pay will depend on how well you bring in listeners. If you have an unpopular radio personality or show you will likely be making little more than minimum wage which is about $7.80 USD an hour. If you are an incredibly popular personality you can make $20 or $30 an hour which can help result in a six figure salary at the end of the year with promotions and bonuses.

Another location issue that you should take into consideration is how large the city is. If for instance you are at a locally owned station in a small town, you will make considerably less than if you worked at a nationally owned station in a big city. The big issue with this is how much money the station can pay you as opposed to how much you should earn. Still another factor is your experience. Those radio djs that have either professional or school experience can expect to walk into the job making more than they would if they were simply someone interested in broadcasting that walked in off the street. A degree and/or certificate to show that you have been educated in broadcasting can help you to get a job much quicker that also has better pay.

Overall the average radio dj makes about $40,000 a year if they are of passable quality and have reasonably loyal fans that provide a good listener base. If you are just starting out you can expect to make in the lower $30,000 or even $20,000 range. If you are incredibly popular and have a good, strong fan following you may be able to make into the six figure range.
